News 2005-2009In 2010, Viols in Our Schools & the GambaCast will host the First Internet Viola da Gamba Composer's Project which seeks composers to write new works for unaccompanied 7-string bass viol to be presented in a New Music recital performed by Phillip W. Serna at Valparaiso University in the Spring of 2010. Video and audio content will be created and owned by the composer with distribution promotional use on the GambaCast video podcast. The Project and the composer(s) could each use the content to promote the work(s).

Temple University’s Boyer College of Music and Dance will be our host as we gather to hear papers and performances in a variety of on-campus as well as historic settings.

Ed Mauger, well loved for his "Philadelphia on Foot," adventures, will lead custom historical tours on Thursday afternoon (3 pm: "Colonial High Life") and Sunday morning (10 am: "Ben Franklin's Musical Philadelphia"). Advance and last-minute sign-ups are available. Cost is $15 per person/per tour.

This orchestra is one of the most refreshing and renewing ensembles in its field. For over 37 years, it has been a true icon in the musical world, inspiring many other baroque musicians all over the world. Belgium should be proud to have this orchestra in its residence. When this orchestra would be forced to stop existing from of a lack in governmental subventions, this would be very harmful for Belgium's image in the world. The course Music for Pope Leo X concentrates on the polyphonic repertoire from the early 16th century. Leo X was born as Giovanni de Medici and sat on the holy chair between 1513 and 1521. This music and art loving pope was a composer himself. He continued the evolution that his predecessor Pope Julius II had started. Under Leo X, the Papal Chapel’s ensemble became one of the most highly renowned ensembles in Europe.

Workshops/Festivals 2009 The Clarion Music Society and the New York Collegium team up for their second annual Clarion-Collegium Week of master classes in Baroque performance practice, lectures and a joint concert, all taking place from Thursday through Sunday, 19-22 February at St. Michael's Church, 225 West 99th Street (at Amsterdam Ave.). (See schedule below.)The week will consist of six master classes taught by Andrew Parrott (voice), Cynthia Roberts (chamber music), Myron Lutzke (cello), Stephen Hammer (oboe), Sandra Miller (flute), and Robert Mealy (violin), and a concert featuring the principal players from the New York Collegium and the Clarion Orchestra joined by world-renowned tenor Rufus Müller.
Clarion-Collegium master classes are for students and young professionals from all over the United States. This year, there will be participants from all of the major New York conservatories as well as from schools as far away as California, North Carolina and New Hampshire. These master classes are designed not only as a valuable educational experience for young musicians with a penchant for the Baroque, but also for audience members who wish to go behind the scenes and learn more about what goes into the preparation of an historically-informed performance. The country's leading Early Music specialists address all aspects of preparing for a performance, from developing the techniques to play authentic Baroque instruments to further exploring and understanding the musical tastes and palette of the Baroque period.

The festival remains one of the cultural landmarks of the East Rising of Yorkshire - utilising some of the Riding's finest historic venues, the Festival embraces a mix of concerts, illustrated talks and educational activities. Guest artists in 2009 include the effervescent Red Priest (not for the faint hearted!) who open the festival (Toll Gavel Methodist Church, Fri 21); tha acclaimed viol group Fretwork presenting a timely commemoration of the genius of Henry Purcell (Beverley Minster, Fri 22) and The Bach Players led by Nicolette Moonen presenting a programme of Bach's instrumental arrangement of Pergolesi's masterpiece 'Stabat Mater' (Beverley Minster, Sat 23).
