(BE) International Gebrieli Workshop (March 12-14, 2010)

Published: Jan 11, 2010 - 06:04 AM

Workshops/Festivals 2010
The annual winds course (Gabrieli workshop) will this year be directed by Wim Becu, Adam Woolf and Judith Pacquier. They explore the so-called ‘polychoral style’ in 17-century Portugal. Works by Frei Manuel Cardoso, Antonio Carreira and Joao Lourenço Rebelo will be performed.
The annual winds course directed by Wim Becu will take place in Neerpelt from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 March 2010, this time with 10 cornetti and 16 tromboni (sackbuts).

The polychoral music by Adrian Willaert (and composers after him such as Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli) is very well known. This is not surprising since Willaert was maestro di cappella at the basilica of San Marco in Venice and is considered to have founded the Venetian school.
He and many after him composed in the so-called ‘polychoral style’ in which multiple ‘chori’ (made up of singers and/or instrumentalists) call in dialogue from one gallery to the other.

This late-16th-century musical style was also favoured in many European musical centres, and was also found in 17th-century Portugal. In the work of composer Joao Lourenço Rebelo (1610-1661), strict Palestrina-style counterpoint alternates with fabulous polychoral writing à la Gabrieli. Rebelo shows his true mastery in the ‘stile concertato’ he uses in his vesper psalm settings.

Works by Frei Manuel Cardoso (1566-1650), Antonio Carreira (ca.1525- ca.1589) and others will also be performed.
