Message from Borys Medicky, Artistic Director

Borys MedickyDear friends,

Nota Bene's 2009/2010 season is a series of collaborations with artists and groups from Kitchener-Waterloo and beyond.  In October we partner with the Royal Astronomical Society's local chapter to present a discussion of the life of William Herschel, astronomer and musician, together with music that explores astronomical and astrological themes.  In February, we welcome Daniel Gariepy and La Belle Danse in a program of dances in the French Baroque style from surviving eighteenth-century choreographies.  Our final concert in April is in collaboration with the Tactus Vocal Ensemble and features an exploration of Easter music from both the Eastern and Western church traditions.  The program will include excerpts from Handel's Messiah -- which had an early tradition as an Easter favourite before it became a Christmas staple -- as well as music by John Taverner, selections from the Serbian and Greek Orthodox a cappella repertoire, and the world premiere of an original composition by well-known local composer Michael Purves-Smith.  I hope you'll join us for all three events and look forward to seeing you at the Registry Theatre.

Sincerely,
Borys Medicky

(CA) Courtesans from Versailles - an Open Dress Rehearsal (February 27th, 2010)

Revel in a lavish celebration of French culture and the decadence of the Court of Louis XIV! Beautiful court and theatrical dances of the 17th & 18th centuries in gorgeous period costume with the lush sounds of the Nota Bene Period Orchestra.

The court of the Roi Soleil enchants with minuets, gavottes and all the beautiful dances of the period. An embroidery of gestures: a decorous finger, invitingly lifted; demure hops threaded ingeniously together in a slow ripple transport you to the domain of the Sun King and his Courtesans.

(CA) Baroque Dance: Courtisans from Versailles (February 28, 2010)

Teaming up with La Belle Danse baroque dance company, we are transported to the court of Louis XIV. Breathtaking period costumes combine with the most beautiful and virtuosic dances of the baroque era, carefully chosen from the masterworks of Lully, Campra and others in a celebration of French culture.

Discover the unique connection between baroque music and its well known dance forms, and witness the exploration of centuries-old documents come to breathing, glittering life. Meet fascinating personages, from the Sun King himself to mythological figures from the pages of the most celebrated french operas and ballets from Apollo to Armide. The compelling "inner life" of 17th and 18th century choreographies reaches across time.
